IDIOMS
English idioms, proverbs and expressions are an important part of everyday English. Idioms can be defined as group of words established by a usage as having a meaning not understandable from those of the individual words.Using common idioms and expressions will make your English sound more native.
Here are some interesting idiom examples with their definitions and illustrations.
1. Cost an arm and a leg
Meaning: to be very expensive.
e.g. I want to buy it but it costs an arm and a leg.
Meaning: to compare which are completely different.
e.g.Comparing the average wages of workers and managers is like trying to compare apples and oranges.
3.Take something with a grain of salt
Meaning: to not completely believe something that you are told.
e.g.Uncle Bill tells great stories, but we take what he says with a grain of salt because he tends to exaggerate.
4.The elephant in the room
Meaning: an obvious problem that people do not want to talk about.
e.g.The fact that his 35-year-old brother was still living with his parents was a big elephant in the room at every family gathering.
5.The best thing since sliced bread
Meaning: A person or thing that is considered to be very good.
e.g. I love this new phone app. It is the best thing since sliced bread.
6.Throw caution to the wind
Meaning: to do something without worrying about the risk or negative results.
e.g.I threw caution to the wind and bought the most expensive one.
